Quick guide to fire extinguisher expiry date India: How often should fire extinguishers be inspected, maintained and hydro-tested in India?
A simple guide to IS 2190 schedules.
Fire extinguishers do not simply "expire" on a single date. Indian Standard IS 2190 sets a schedule for inspection, maintenance, testing and refilling, and a maximum service life. Here is what building owners and facility managers need to know.
The IS 2190 maintenance schedule
- Monthly inspection: a visual check that the extinguisher is in place, accessible, undamaged, sealed and showing correct pressure.
- Yearly maintenance: a detailed examination by a trained person, covering mechanical parts, agent and pressure.
- Hydraulic pressure test, water, foam and dry powder types: every 3 years.
- Hydraulic pressure test, CO2 and clean agent types: every 5 years.
- Refilling: after any use, when inspection shows it is needed, and on the refill cycle for the agent.
What does the monthly check involve?
- Extinguisher is at its marked location and not blocked
- Operating instructions are readable
- Safety pin and tamper seal are intact
- Pressure gauge is in the green zone
- No dents, rust, leaks or damaged hose
- Service tag is present and up to date
What happens in a hydro test?
The empty cylinder is filled with water and pressurised well above its normal working pressure to confirm it will not rupture. Cylinders that fail must be condemned and replaced. Hydro testing needs proper equipment and trained staff, so always use an experienced service provider.
Service life and replacement
Every refillable extinguisher has a maximum service life counted from its manufacturing date, after which it must be replaced even if it looks fine. Check the manufacturing date on each unit and plan replacements in advance.
Why records matter
During a fire NOC inspection or renewal, or after an incident, you may be asked to show maintenance records. Keep a register (or digital log) with each extinguisher's location, type, manufacture date, last maintenance, last hydro test and next due date.
