Fire Safety for Hotels and Guest Houses: What Owners Must Get Right

Updated: November 2026 2 min readBy the Vinsafe fire safety team

In short: Guests sleep in unfamiliar rooms, which makes hotel fires especially dangerous. The fire safety measures every hotel and guest house needs.

Hotel guests are asleep in unfamiliar buildings, often on upper floors, and many have never read the evacuation plan on the back of the door. That combination makes hotel and guest house fires especially deadly. Recent fire incidents in Delhi have again highlighted what happens when buildings operate without proper fire safety clearances or have only one way out.

Delhi fire clearance for hotels

Under the Delhi Fire Service Rules, hotels and guest houses above 12 m in height or with ground plus three upper storeys need fire clearance, a lower threshold than for many other buildings. Confirm the current requirements for your property.

Essential measures

  • Smoke detectors in every guest room and corridor, linked to an alarm audible in every room
  • ABC extinguishers in corridors and near staircases
  • Kitchen extinguishers, fire blankets and kitchen suppression in the restaurant kitchen
  • Emergency lighting and photoluminescent exit signs at low level, visible in smoke
  • Evacuation plan inside every room door
  • At least two usable exit routes, never locked from inside
  • Fire-rated doors to stairwells, kept closed
  • Smoke escape hoods in rooms or on floors, giving guests clean air to escape through smoke
  • Evacuation chairs for guests with limited mobility

Staff are the first responders

Night staff are often few. Train every shift on the alarm panel, evacuation procedures, extinguisher use and guest assistance. Run drills on the night shift too.

Housekeeping and hidden risks

  • No storage in staircases or under stairs
  • Regular cleaning of kitchen exhaust ducts
  • Checking room heaters, kettles and guest chargers
  • Electrical load checks when adding rooms or ACs
